The world of football has united in support of Sir Alex Ferguson who has undergone emergency brain surgery. Manchester United confirmed in a statement on Saturday night that the 76-year-old would require ‘a period of intensive care to optimise his recovery’, but that the procedure ‘had gone very well’. Ferguson had been in attendance at Old Trafford last Sunday to watch United beat Arsenal 2-1. Before the game he was on the pitch to present his long-time rival turned friend, Arsene Wenger, with a commemorative vase following the Frenchman’s decision to stand down at the end of the season. United’s players had been informed of Ferguson’s condition before the statement was made public and the likes of Michael Carrick and David de Gea were the first to send their former boss messages of support on Twitter.
